VIDEO: Using LIWC for Computer-Aided Text Analysis in Management Research

Are you an academic researcher who relies on self-report survey data? Even if you haven’t used it in your own project, you have probably heard mention of computer-aided text analysis (CATA). CATA offers a way to quantify text, thereby, acquiring an understanding of a text’s author. It is an interesting approach to supplement or replace surveys for certain research projects.

I presented a professional development workshop on LIWC recently at the Eastern Academy of Management Annual Conference 2020. LIWC, of course, is the most commonly used software for CATA in management research and it has been used in hundreds of academic studies.

You can watch the video of my conference presentation at the end of this article. In the video I use the rtweet package, available in the R programming language. I download the latest 100 posts from the @realDonaldTrump and @JoeBiden Twitter accounts. I then use LIWC to analyze the text by examining several syntactic and psychological constructs.

Feel free to contact me with questions if you are interested in using LIWC in a future project.
